EXTERIOR WOOD DOORS

Exterior wood doors, sometimes called "entry doors," are often more decorative and ornate, have more durable weather resistant pre-finishes, and are generally stronger and more secure than interior wood doors. For example, exterior doors are made with solid lock and kick rails to resist delamination when exposed to outside elements, while interior doors are made with engineered lock and kick rails. Finishes for exterior doors include a topcoat to protect against moisture and ultra-violet (UV) light, and are thus more expensive than wood finishes for interior doors.

Exterior doors can include sidelites and/or transoms, adding to the beauty and scale of the entrance.

JW Designs Build Doors to Your Specifications

INTERIOR WOOD DOORS

Sometimes called "passage doors" (indicating passage between interior rooms or into closets), wood interior doors add natural beauty and warmth to the home. Custom interior doors are manufactured with slightly different construction than exterior doors, and do not have the same pre-finishes or security requirements. For example, interior doors are made with engineered lock and kick rails, while these rails are solid wood on exterior doors to resist delamination when exposed to outside elements. Finishes for interior doors do not have a topcoat to protect against rain and Ultra-Violet (UV) light, and are thus less expensive than wood finishes for exterior doors.

Delamination is a mode of failure for composite materials and steel. In laminated materials, repeated cyclic stresses, impact, and so on can cause layers to separate, forming a mica-like structure of separate layers, with significant loss of mechanical toughness.

FRENCH DOORS

French wood doors are double doors with glass panes (lights) extending the full vertical height of the doors. French doors have an aesthetic appeal that achieves an elegant, timeless look inside or outside the home. In-Swing French Doors open to the interior of a home and maintain usable space on the outside of the door. For a multiple-pane look, choose from a variety of grid options available to create the look of individual lights.

Born in the Renaissance Period, French doors were first introduced as windows that reached the floor. Renaissance architecture focused on symmetry and proportion, with a heavy emphasis on light, thus creating the necessity for glass panes. French doors bring more natural light into the home.

Today French doors remain a popular renovation choice in American homes for adding brightness, ventilation and elegance. In addition, there is a romantic association with French doors that can boost a home’s resale value.

CLOSET + PANTRY DOORS

Wood closet and pantry doors can be configured as hinged, bi-fold, or bypass door functions. Bi-fold doors are door pairs, hinged in the middle, that slide on a track and open and close in an "accordion" fashion. Bypass doors are double doors and slide side-by-side on a track. For bi-fold or bypass doors from JW DESIGNS, the track system is included with the doors at no additional cost. JW Design also offers glass closet and pantry doors, which are typically 1-lite (one large glass pane), with optional patterned frosted glass. JW DESIGNS offers a variety of louver door designs for closet and pantry applications, with louvers (slats) allowing open ventilation while preserving privacy.

Door Sidelites

are an excellent option for those who wish to enhance the width of their exterior entryways and add a little more curb appeal.

Selecting the right wood

Selecting the wood type will be your first step

Walnut remains one of the most versatile types of wood. The dense, hard timber is tight grained and absorbs finishes and polishes well. You can choose from a variety of species of trees including Douglas Fir, Maple, Oak, Cherry, Bamboo, Pine, Western Red Cedar and more!

DOORS

JW Designs - Jim Wildman's wood finishing experience began over 25 years ago, and he takes pride in his craftsmanship and finishes. Jim will help you select the right wood and guide you to chose from many applied stains and glazes—available in a large selection of standard colors, or custom color matched to taste.

JW Design’s wood finishes are “fine-furniture” quality, providing much higher quality and lower cost than on-site painting.

OPTIONS-You can select finished wood products that are ready to install, adding value by reducing time and scheduling in the construction process or sanded and ready for on-site painting.

WOOD SPECIES

Wood comes in many varieties.

OAK, BLACK WALNUT, MAHOGONY, CHERRY, ALDER, MAPLE AND PINE ...ETC.

Wood is strong, 100% renewable, thermally efficient, acoustically calming, cost effective, easy to transform into virtually any shape, and always in harmony with its surroundings. Wood doors open with a warm welcome.

Choosing the perfect wood species for your project is easier said than done. Jim will guide you to make the right decision. It is wise to consider not only the color, but the hardness, strength, workability, and other characteristics.

Species can be further designated by “grade,” such as “knotty” (sometimes called “character”) or “select” (clear, with few or no knots). In addition, unique effects can be achieved on certain species by special “cuts” of the logs, such as “rift” and “quarter” cuts.

GRADES OF WOOD

JW DESIGN generally offers two grades of wood—Knotty grade and Select grade.

KNOTTY GRADE (SOMETIMES CALLED “CHARACTER” OR “RUSTIC”)

Key features of Knotty grade include:

  • Lumber grades #1 Common, #2 Common, Rustic, Premium Frame, Frame, Custom Shop, #1 Shop, Finish Common, and Premium Common

  • Large open knots, star knots, and sound knots

Please note that for JW DESIGN’s Knotty grade, no door has too many or too few knots. No door has knots that are too large or too small. Depending on individual knot structure, knots may not be patch filled, may be partially filled, or may be filled flush at JW DESIGN’s discretion. Typically knots will be filled only when needed and as much as needed to prevent light or core from showing through the product.

Quantity and size of knots will be typical of the species of wood. For example, knots in Alder are numerous but generally small cracks or star-shaped knots, while knots in Cherry are fewer in number but are much larger and typically open knots.

Example White Oak

White Oak ranges from a light to dark brown, and has a more impressive ray fleck than red oak. Over time, it ages to a rich brown. This is a highly workable wood, very stiff, heavy, and durable. It accepts finishes well. Due to its tighter grain, it does not require grain filler like red oak. White oak is the signature wood of Mission style.

Scientific name Quercus alba, it also known as stave oak, ridge white oak, and fork-leaf oak, grows along the entire Atlantic seaboard, extending as far west as Texas. It has a lightly acrid, sweet scent.

Deciding on the texture and finish of your doors is important to achieving the perfect look on your home.

A few questions you should consider are: Wood-grained or smooth? Stained or painted? Bold or neutral? Grained doors can be stained or painted, while smooth doors can be painted almost any color you can dream up.Let us help inspire your selection.

The beauty of wood is revealed by adding stain colors.

Difference Between Hardwood and Softwood

Both hardwoods and softwoods can be used to make furniture, but when it comes to doors, hardwoods like oak are far more common, and with good reason. Softwood is significantly less expensive, with softwoods like cedar and pine used quite regularly in cheap furniture, particularly in the US, where such trees are quite prevalent. The quality, however, is almost always inferior as softwood is less durable, whereas hardwood, if treated well, could potentially last a lifetime! That's not to say that hardwood won't warp and show damage over time, but it stains better, holds its shape for longer and simply looks better. It can also be finished with a variety of oils, waxes and/or paints, so you're more likely to be able to achieve the specific look you're going for.

Each Door is hand finished.
