The Ultimate Checklist for Good SEO: What Every Web Page Needs

Updated: Jan 24, 2023

As an artist, I understand the importance of having a website that showcases my work and reaches a broader audience. One of the most critical factors in achieving this is having good SEO (Search Engine Optimization) on my website.

When it comes to optimizing each web page on my site for SEO, there are several key elements that I make sure to include.

Step 1: Title Tag

The title tag is one of the essential elements of a web page for SEO. This tag is the text that appears in the search engine results as the page's title and should accurately reflect the page's content. The title tag should be unique for each website page and contain your primary keyword.

It's essential to remember that the title tag appears in the search engine result snippet, so it's the first thing a user will see when they see your website. Therefore, making it compelling and relevant to the user's search query is essential. It should be around 50-60 characters long, including spaces. Longer than that, search engines will truncate it, and you'll lose the effectiveness of the title tag.

Some best practices to keep in mind when creating a title tag:

  • Use your primary keyword as close to the beginning of the title tag as possible.

  • Keep it short and sweet, around 55 characters.

  • Use a separator such as a pipe (|) or a dash (-) to separate the primary keyword from the rest of the title tag.

  • Make it compelling and relevant to the user's search query.

  • It's important to remember that the title tag is a critical part of on-page SEO and can make a big difference in how well your pages rank in search results.

Step 2: Meta Description

The meta description is another crucial element for SEO, and it is a summary of the page that appears under the title tag in the search results. The meta description should accurately reflect the content of the page and should include your primary keyword.

The meta description gives users an idea of what the page is about and what they can expect to find if they click on the link. It's also important to keep in mind that the meta description may be used by search engines as a snippet when the page appears in the search results. So it's crucial to make it compelling and relevant to the user's search query.

Some best practices to keep in mind when creating a meta description:

  • Use your primary keyword in the description.

  • Keep it short and sweet, around 155 characters.

  • Make it compelling and relevant to the user's search query.

  • Avoid repeating the title tag in the meta description.

  • It's important to note that while the meta description doesn't directly affect your search engine rankings, it can influence the click-through rate (CTR) from the search results. The higher the CTR, the more likely the page will rank better in search engine results.

Step 3: Headings

Properly formatted headings, such as H1, H2, H3, etc., are essential for SEO because they help organize the page's content and signal to search engines what the page is about.

The H1 heading is the most important heading on the page and should be used for the main title or topic of the page. Subsequent headers, such as H2 and H3, can break up the content into sections and subsections, making it easier for users to read and understand the page.

Some best practices to keep in mind when creating headings:

  • Use only one H1 heading per page.

  • Use H2 headings for main sections and H3 headings for sub-sections

  • Use your primary keyword in the H1 heading.

  • Make sure headings accurately reflect the content they introduce.

  • Avoid overusing headings or using them just for styling.

  • Properly formatted headings help search engines understand the page's structure and content and make it more user-friendly. It also helps to improve the readability and accessibility of the content, which can lead to better engagement and a higher likelihood of users clicking through to other pages on your site.

Step 4: Alt Text

Alt text (alternative text) describes images on a web page and is vital for SEO because it helps search engines understand the picture's context.

The alt text will be displayed when the website cannot display an image on a web page. Unfortunately, this is also the text read by screen readers for visually impaired users, so it is vital to make the text descriptive and valuable for both search engines and users.

Some best practices to keep in mind when creating alt text:

  • Use your primary keyword in the alt text.

  • Concisely describe the image,

  • Avoid using keywords just for the sake of it, and the text should be helpful and relevant to the image.

  • Avoid using generic text such as "image" or "picture."

  • By using alt text, you are providing context to the image and making it more searchable. This can help to improve the visibility of the images in image search results and can also help to improve the overall SEO of the page.

Step 5: Content

The content of a web page is one of the most important elements for SEO because it is what search engines use to understand what a page is about and how it can be helpful for users.

The content should be unique, relevant, and informative and include keywords relevant to the page and the website's overall theme. The content should also be well-written and easy to read.

Some best practices to keep in mind when creating content:

  • Use your primary keyword in the content, but don't stuff it in unnaturally.

  • Use related keywords throughout the content.

  • Make sure the content is unique and informative.

  • Keep it well-written and easy to read.

  • Use headings and subheadings to organize the content.

  • Search engines use the content on a page to determine its relevance and usefulness to users. By providing high-quality, unique, and relevant content, you can improve the visibility of your pages in search results and drive more traffic to your site.

Step 6: Internal Linking

Internal linking refers to linking to other pages on your website. Internal linking is essential for SEO because it helps search engines understand your site's structure and allows visitors to navigate it.

When creating internal links, it's essential to use descriptive and relevant anchor text (the clickable text in a link). This will give users and search engines a clear idea of what the linked page is about and help to improve the visibility of the linked page in search results.

Some best practices to keep in mind when creating internal links:

  • Use descriptive and relevant anchor text.

  • Link to deep pages on your site, not just the homepage.

  • Use internal links to guide users through the site and help them find related content.

  • Use a mix of text and image links.

  • Proper internal linking can help to improve the user experience on your website.

Step 7: Backlinks

Backlinks, also known as inbound links, link from other websites that point to your website. Backlinks are essential for SEO because they signal to search engines that other websites consider your content valuable and relevant.

When creating backlinks, it's essential to focus on quality over quantity. High-quality backlinks from authoritative websites can be more valuable than low-quality backlinks from less reputable sites.

Some best practices to keep in mind when building backlinks:

  • Focus on getting backlinks from authoritative websites in your industry

  • Create high-quality, shareable content that will attract natural backlinks

  • Reach out to other websites and ask for a link when appropriate

  • Use a mix of do follow and no follow links.

  • Avoid buying or trading links.

Backlinks are considered a vote of confidence by search engines and can help improve your pages' visibility in search results. Still, it's important to remember that quality is more important than quantity. Building relationships with other websites in your industry, creating high-quality and shareable content, and reaching out to other websites are great ways to build backlinks.
