Other things worth noting from watching Jim Wildman’s instagram videos are the sensitivity of his initial drawing and inking work that appears magically and builds in degrees. He is working from an art table where he is painting flat, he's taped the edges of his works on paper at times, however keeps the works free so he can rotate them as he inks.

Below is the link to Jim Wildman’s instagram videos so you can watch them over and over.

You will enjoy watching him do a few rough sketches (demos?) as you watch his reels. Short stuff- but each is around 30 seconds to one minute and well worth watching. Things one can note? Jim uses Flat hake-like brushes, not floppy mops. He works deliberately and adds ink as he continues to work and uses the ink to add darker values. He even mixes his ink with the watercolor while wet. He uses a palette knife to make scratches for unusual white detail exposing the watercolor paper below. He tends to paint flat. He does keep his paper in place in the beginning stages then you will notice he rotates his paper to add various angles of strokes of the pen. There's a lot of preserved white and negative spaces in his drawings and painting. Watching the reels gives you some insight into his process.

Jim Wildman Painting Process

Here are some things to notice if you are an artist wanting to grow your skills.

NOTE HOW HE PAINTS THE SHADOWS GRADUALLY BUILDING HIS LAYERS OF LIGHTS TO DARKS REMINISCENT OF THE TECHNIQUE OF CHIAROSCURO

  • Chiaroscuro, (from Italian chiaro, “light,” and scuro, “dark”), technique employed in the visual arts to represent light and shadow as they define three-dimensional objects. Artists who are well known for the use of chiaroscuro include Leonardo da Vinci and Caravaggio. Leonardo was a master of Chiaroscuro and he employed it to give a vivid impression of the three-dimensionality of his figures, while Caravaggio used contrasts to create emotional drama. Both artists were also aware of the emotional impact of how building values adds drama and emotion to their work .

  • The important thing to remember about Chiaroscuro is: Painting using the chiaroscuro technique, is a method that uses shadows and a “single light source” to create depth and drama.

THE SKETCH IS “NOT” REALLY ROUGH. HE BEGINS WITH ONLY BASIC SHAPES THAT LET HIM BUILD DETAIL AND FOREGROUND.

THEN JIM INKS IN THE DARKER DETAIL Or AREAS OF VARIOUS VALUES. THIS IS A PLACE TO SHOW HIS VALUES STARTING TO TAKE SHAPE.

HE DROPS IN LAYERS AND BUILDS HIS FACIAL FORM OR THE DETAIL OF THE FLOWER BY PAINTING IT NEGATIVELY USING THE NOTAN METHOD

Good Composition in art relies on contrast between strong light and strong dark edges to pull the viewer’s eye along a path creating eye movement. Notan – What Every Artist Ought To Know! Discover the hidden secrets to creating the structure of a light path by watching Jim's videos.

JIM USES HIS BEGINNING PENCIL SKETCHING TO CREATE AREAS OF DARKS AND LIGHTS.

Notan is a Japanese term that literally means 'light-dark harmony'. Artists use 'notan studies' to explore different arrangements of light and dark elements in a painting, without having the distraction of other elements like color, texture and finer details. Notan eliminates all the “noise” in the painting and reveals what would appear to be a strong composition of lights and darks; mistakes many artists make with notan studies is using too much detail. Jim loves detail and builds his values slowly. Every painting has some kind of balance between light and dark elements. Often you will notice there is a strong contrast or clash between lights and darks (like you will find in the Renaissance drawings and paintings), and sometimes it is more subtle (like in the Impressionist paintings). In some of Jim’s initial studies in pencil you will see it is a preparation for his paintings, the notan design will be a dominant feature in the pencil work, with a strong arrangement of light and dark elements.

In his watercolor application part of his paintings, the notan design will be less influential and other elements will be the focus as he begins layering the colors. This is apparent in many of the high-key areas of his paintings where you will see he has been influenced by the Impressionists who did not necessarily have strong underlying notan designs but painted quickly focusing on the light

Why you will want to learn more about notan if you are a painter.

What Makes a Strong Notan Design?

Let me review with you what are some key features of paintings needed to have strong notan designs:

  • Create strong value groups and remember lights and darks make your eye move around. Remember (lights grouped together and darks grouped together). This is the opposite of having values placed or scattered all over the place.

  • Try to keep in mind Lights balanced against Darks.

  • Think of how flowers grow and remember elements of design.

  • Pencil sketching allows you to develop an interesting pattern created by the lights and darks of the build up of pencil lines

  • Simplify the values.

Look for the balance of light and dark elements in Wildman’s painting which are not always apparent on first glance, as his videos because they are shot in time lapse appear to be put down quickly the process actually takes many ours and be sure to look for other elements he builds quickly that may be competing for your attention like when he begins to paint with watercolor be sure to notice his method of brushwork.

A Notan is used to filter out all these other elements so that the balance of light and dark elements is revealed. In a sense, a notan represents the most basic abstract design of a painting.

  • JIM BEGINS THE WATERCOLOR WITH INDIVIDUAL STROKES AS HE SOFTENS HIS LINES OF INK AND THEY BEGIN TO SOFTEN UP REAL QUICKLY CAUSING ELEMENTS TO MOVE INTO A HAZY DISTANCE.

  • WET INTO WET IS JIMS SECRET

  • NOTE HOW HE'S ABLE TO PAINT THE FOREGROUND AT THE SAME TIME AS THE BACKGROUND, LIKE TWO SEPARATE PAINTINGS.

  • YOU CAN ALSO SEE HOW HE BUILDS DARKER VALUES WET INTO WET, BIT BY BIT. NOW HE BEGINS TO BUILD FORM IN THE MIDG-ROUND, AFTER THE FOREGROUND HAS DRIED SOME.

  • NOTE HOW HE DROPS THE DETAILS OF A FACE OR THE DETAIL OF THE FLOWR OR LEAVES INTO THE AREA FOR EXAMPLE; PLACING SHADOWS BEHIND THE FLOWERS JUST BEFORE IT DRIES COMPLETELY.

  • AFTER THE INK WORK HAS DRIED , HE DOES FOREGROUND AREAS LIKE PETALS AND BRANCHES OF THE FLOWER OR DETAILS OF HIS FACES THE EYE AREA AND THEN HE BEGINS TO DO DRY BRUSH WORK.

  • NOTE HOW HE BUILDS A WORK: BUILDING OF LAYERS AFTER HIS CAREFULLY APPLIED LINE OF HIS PENCIL DRAWING.

  • THEN JIM ADDS HIS PEN AND INK AND THEN CONCURRENTLY ADDING WATER COLOR BY BUILDING LAYERS.

  • AFTER HE HAS ALLOWED THE WATER COLOR TO DRY ENOUGH HE CAN ADD HARD EDGED SHADOWS.

Whimsical Watercolors

Jim Wildman at times might be put in the category of a pop-expressionist painter creating whimsical women who embrace their beauty and feminism.

Jim Wildman’s stunning Animal and faces, figures, floral, and fauna motifs have caught the imagination of the world. His beautiful entrancing women's faces reflect "joie de vivre" (joy of life) freedom, overwhelming energy, the vibrancy of life, and the abundance of the world. His paintings show the ever-changing nature of our earth and his respect and admiration of the female persona.

Be sure to check out Jim Wildman's oil painting in his JohnsonWildman.com website where he paints with his aunt, Cheryl Johnson.

Jim uses digital media, sketching, fine line drawing translucent watercolor, digital opacity shades acrylics to get the base colors to start his paintings. He then often covers this with oil paint, or mixed media alternating between translucent and opaque strokes. He uses a variety of painting implements, computer, photography and tools such as brushes and paint pens, oil pastels, spray paints, and even sheets of gold leaf.

He begins by creating an evocative face and often adds other elements such as ares of florals or forest animals, foxes, owls, birds, bees, vines to his portrait studies. Notice in any of his work Jim, purposefully creates “Notan” voids of dark or light spaces.

The “Notan” space creates open space; a place for the eye to rest and adds to the power of his balanced compostion's. Often by overlapping elements in his women's faces you will notice parts of the figure remains subliminally layered for the viewers’ eye to complete the work. It is true that Jim Wildman’s abstract style makes the viewers scan over his paintings on paper or on canvas, allowing the viewer to have time to savor every little detail that has been created.

So popular are his works that he enjoys an increased following viewership on his Instagram, tick tock and Pinterest accounts. Make sure you subscribe or like when visiting his social media accounts.
